Saudade is the bittersweet longing for a past moment, a complex feeling that blends melancholy with desire to relive what once was. Though often tied to old age, it can surface at any stage of life. Saudade arises from a mix of hormones, neurotransmitters, and cognition, evoking a burning desire to return to former experiences, places, or people. It’s triggered by sensory cues, bringing back memories that stir both sadness and the fear that these moments may never return. Embracing this pain is part of accepting the past and living in the present, as it shapes who we are.
